OpenAI Developing ChatGPT-Based AI Device Designed to Be Worn Behind the Ear

OpenAI is developing a new artificial intelligence device powered by ChatGPT, designed to be worn behind the ear.
According to OpenAI’s Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane, the AI devices are expected to be introduced in the second half of 2026.
He added that the company anticipates these devices will be available to consumers by the end of 2026, though specific technical details have not yet been disclosed.
The device is expected to resemble Apple’s AirPods in form, allowing users to wear it comfortably in or behind the ear.

OpenAI has indicated that the product could be launched as early as September 2026, with plans to introduce five additional AI devices by 2028.
It is worth noting that in May 2025, OpenAI acquired “io,” a company co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Earlier, in a February 2025 interview, Sam Altman stated that OpenAI is working on ChatGPT-powered hardware devices as potential alternatives to smartphones.
